Fei Disbrow

Canadian artist, Fei Disbrow, is a self-described “maker.”  She is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, photography, works on paper, and textiles.  Guided by her interest in material manipulation, Disbrow explores the in-between spaces and the familiar gone astray.  Disbrow’s work has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the US and Canada.  She has lived and worked in both countries, earning her MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.  While in Oregon, Disbrow was awarded a public art grant from RACC, and a residency with the Intermedia Department at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.  In Toronto, she was awarded the MST Bronze Award at the Emerging Sculptors Exhibition at the Canadian Sculpture Centre and was granted a term in the Guest Renter Program at Open Studios.  Disbrow has held residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Vermont Studio Center, and was a guest artist in the Material Matters Research Lab at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

I am interested in the interplay between different aspects of the body and the way in which those aspects interact with the natural and built environment.  My work is a balance between process and play.  I bring forms into existence using additive and subtractive methods, regardless of the media employed.  I latch on to a media as I develop a series of works: slicing, stitching, and adhering together photographs, textiles and/or industrial materials to create compositions and objects; forming arterial connections with yarn, felt, and ropes; and manipulating foam and plaster to amass forms that edge towards the uncanny.  I revel in repetition and succumb to the process of making, not knowing where it might lead.  My explorations allow pieces to emerge, as I willingly trust in the possibility of the outcome: the familiar gone astray. - FD
